Tobacco is one of the most widely used addictive substances in the world making it one of the largest industries across the globe. Tobacco can grow in any warm and moist environment which means it is farmed on all continents except Antarctica. The tobacco industry includes tobacco producers and farmers, tobacco manufacturers, wholesale distributors, and importers of tobacco products.
Near infrared spectroscopy has been widely used in the tobacco industry for years. This is because it is a rapid technique that eliminates sample preparation and costly consumables. NIR is non-destructive, capable of simultaneous analysis of multiple components, and can be used for online monitoring. With flexible sampling mechanisms, NIR can analyze solids, liquids, and gasses.
Compared to traditional methods such as wet chemistry, HPLC and gas chromatography, NIR spectroscopy provides considerable advantages in process and quality control (QA/QC) applications such as:
NIR eliminates the need for consumables such as solvents, columns, and reagents.
NIR provides real time analysis – generally less than 30 seconds’ measurement time; it also eliminates sample preparation time.
Portable NIR spectrometers can be used in the field as well as in the lab and can measure multiple components per analysis.
Our NIR spectrometers are user-friendly, providing point-of-need analysis.
NIR means the elimination of many sources of systematic error, particularly during sample and test preparation
Galaxy Scientific’s product line includes Near Infrared analyzers that can be used throughout the tobacco manufacturing plant and process. Our products can be used in a lab for quick samples analysis, near production line or on-line for continuous process monitoring.

QuasIR 2000E
The QuasIR™ 2000E is designed for continuous measurement of the chemical composition of material transported on a conveyor belt, through a pipe, or in a chute. It features- unique external projection optics using high powered tungsten lamps to illuminate the sample from as far as 24 inches away and collect the scattered reflection off the sample through a fiber optic cable.
QuasIR 3000
Our QuasIR™ 3000 FT-NIR spectrometer is equipped with an integrating sphere for reflection measurements of solids as well as transflectance measurements of opaque liquids and pastes. The instrument has a wide range of applications, especially in the food and agriculture sectors.
SpectralSage™ Software Suite
Galaxy Scientific’s SpectralSage software suite is a software toolkit for method developers, administrators, and routine users. The suite combines the ease of use needed for routine operation with feature-rich functions for the advanced method developer.
